Group Descriptions

Buckeye offers instruction, training & competition for all levels of swimmers seeking individual development in a unified team environment. We strongly believe in the importance of peers in a swimmer’s development. We will offer competitive group programs for seasoned swimmers that can’t get enough of the water. These groups ask swimmers to attend between 75-90% of practices (attendance requirement increases with age/group). We also have terrific starter program for new competitive swimmers or kids that have interests beyond the pool. These groups typically offer three practices a week and we like to see the kids twice a week. Those wishing to join our age group & competitive programs may need to participate in a tryout for correct group placements. Tryouts will be offered in July & August, Thanksgiving week and at the completion of the winter competition season.

High School

We offer customized training programs for swimmers that would like to focus solely on the high school swim season.  Swimmers in this group typically train with their high school team from November through February and simply want some extra work in the 'off season.'

High School swimmers have several options at Buckeye:
Option 1: Join the Senior program which is a year-round commitment to the program, with attendance requirements. Senior Program requirements are outlined on the next page.
Option 2: Join the Junior program which is also a year round commitment to the program, but has a slightly relaxed attendance policy. Junior Program requirements are outlined on page 4.
Option 3: Fall High School Prep Program. This year will offer a High School Prep program from mid-August to the conclusion of the Senior Meet in November. This is a 12 week program. Participants attend all offered Scarlet or Junior practices (pick one group please) with no attendance requirement.

Silver

Silver 2
This is a recreational swim practice group for swimmers that are interested in swimming but do not wish to attend competitions. Additionally, this is a great place for older swimmers to start that have never competed. This group will meet three times a week for one to one and half hours of swimming and/or conditioning. The group will emphasize stroke development and conditioning. Competing in practice will take on a smaller role. Recommended for ages 11-14, minimum age 9.
Silver Group Requirements
Attendance – Consistent attendance is a key element to success and improvement. Swimmers in this group should maintain a minimum of 66% practice attendance (2 practice each week).
Prior swimming knowledge – our Silver group expects that swimmers have had some prior  swim experience. Swimmers should be able to compete 25-50 yards of each of the four competitive strokes legally. An ability to read a pace clock is not required, but very helpful. Swimmers should have the ability to quickly follow instructions and a desire to work with teammates and coaches to become a better swimmer.

Emphasis will be on continued skill development, learning to control speed, introducing age appropriate stroke techniques, learning to work cooperatively with teammates and learning how to swim a training set. This group is designed for athletes who enjoy swimming and fitness but are not yet ready to dedicate themselves to swimming as their primary sport. Practices are offered 3-4 days per week during the winter season. Additional practices will be offered during the long course season. Minimum age – 5, Recommended for ages 8-under.

Group Progression Chart

This chart is intended to help swimmers and parent navigate the expected progression through the groups at Buckeye. We are showing a typical progression and an accelerated progression. All move ups are considered on an individual basis with physical maturity, and prior experience as part of that consideration. It is very typical to see a girl moved up before a boy, as girls mature earlier than boys.

What our parents say

Our parents love Buckeye and the experiences we offer!

As a former high school and collegiate swimmer, I was looking for a swim team that would help my daughters develop a true love for swimming. I wanted a team that would focus on technique and proficiency first and speed later. Our girls have always loved to swim and began swimming with Buckeye in November 2014. In less than 2 years, they have accomplished far more than we thought possible. BKYS has helped them turn their love for swimming and dreams of success into a reality. Working with Coach Laurie and Coach Lew has taught them that through hard work, commitment, discipline and belief in yourself, you can achieve your goals while having fun in the process. My girls are learning life lessons that they will use long after they are done swimming: setting and achieving goals, dealing with disappointments and setbacks, time management skills, focus and understanding that hard work and dedication can lead to true accomplishments. Buckeye Swimming is a family-oriented team. Parents sit together at meets supporting and cheering on every swimmer. Our family truly loves our “Buckeye Family” and feel fortunate to be a part of such a fabulous group of coaches, swimmers and parents that we call our TEAM!

-Laurie S. / Parent

" My daughters both swim year round. We just moved here less than a year ago and I took a lot of time evaluating clubs and chose Buckeye Swim Team. Both girls are happy with the team. The Coaches are super responsive to my emails and great with the kids. My girls swim in the Junior group and sometimes attend Scarlet. Coaches Lewis and Laurie instill character in the kids in addition to teaching competitive swim training. One would be hard pressed to find in the better coaches to swim for in a year round swimming program. We are super excited about swimming for BKYS and can't wait to see what the future holds for our swimmers and for the swim program."
